Slovakia is famous because of thousands of caves. They are the true treasures Slovak nature. Alltogether there are over 4000 in Slovakia but only 12 are open to public. Many of them are located close to High Tatras. As a tip for day trip we offer the following caves that are located within 30 miles away from our apartments.
The Belianska Cave,well known for all golddiggers of the first half of the 18th century, is in the Eastern part of Tatra mountain range – Belianske Tatry and is located in the National park of High Tatras – TANAP. Pagoda stalagmites and flowstone waterfalls more than 50 m long dominate the show path. With more than 10 000 stairs is Belianska Cave the longest cave open to public. The Dobšinská Ice Cave is situated in the Spiš-Gemer karst, in the National Park – Slovak Paradise and by the character of glaciation belongs among the most important caves in the world. Many people are astonished by the thickness of ice that reaches 26 metres in some points. Since 2000 is Dobsinska Ice cave inscribed in the world heritage list. Vazecka cave is located on the halfway between Liptovský Mikuláš and Poprad. The cave represents an important palaeontological finding place of cave bear bones (Ursus spelaeus), which was bigger and heavier than present brown bear. The sculpture in life size is newly installed in the cave.
